All pike anglers need a knowledge of their quarry and the best methods for catching it. This book provides both. All aspects and methods of pike fishing are covered: live-baiting, dead-baiting, lure fishing, river fishing, and piking in all types of stillwater; and since the book is divided into the months of one year, each method is adapted to take account of seasonal conditions. For the novice piker, there is a treasure trove of knowledge and advice; for the expert, there are scores of tips for refining technique and, ultimately for putting more fish on the bank. Mick Brown is one of the UK's most respected-predator anglers. He has eleven pike of over thirty pounds to his credit. This thought-provoking book gives a detailed account of pike-fishing tactics in North America. More dogmatic than most books on the subject, with the main emphasis on location but very strong on presentation as well. Mostly concerned with boat fishing with lures, especially trolling, on waters that would be considered large in the UK. Even so there is plenty of information and advice for any angler interested in pike. Excellent value at less than the price of a good lure!.

Pike have become an increasingly popular quarry for fly fishermen, not least because most people have reasonably easy access to pike waters. The problem for most fishers has been keeping up with recent advances in this fast moving sport - it seems no time ago that heavy rods and deeply sunk flies were the norm, yet this approach is increasingly being sidelined as anglers move towards lighter tackle and surface lures. There is still a place for ‘traditional’ 15 centimetre flies, but Michael Jensen’s book showcases a mouth-watering range of flies ranging from poppers to deer hair divers. After a brief description of tackle and tactics, more than half the text is given over to patterns, with detailed instructions on how to tie them. The photographs are absolutely superb; the text, by comparison, is a slight disappointment, showing signs of a rather rapid translation from the original Danish - but Fly Fishing for Pike is none the worse for that and would make a great Christmas present.

Fred Buller's titanic masterpiece is an unrivalled piece of angling history which will fascinate those who are fascinated by pike angling and which anglers of every persuasion will be thrilled by.

Collecting the tales of capture of the 250 largest pike caught in the British Isles up until 1971 (plus other monsters from the European continent), researching their history, and personally verifying wherever possible FB has accessed and faithfully recorded a monumental treasury of fact and, deliberately, some fable.

Each capture is examined for veracity. Details are given wherever possible and cross checks and confusions made and dismembered. Locations have been photographed and any snippets of background ferreted out and set before the reader. Sadly a lot of this information and evidence will no longer exist and so this book is the best record or irreplaceable artefacts associated with the capture of big pike.

My only critscism is that the book includes a number of specimens not caught by fair angling (netting, trapping and shooting amongst others). Perhaps this will be rectified when someone is dedicated enough to update the work by which the author will always be remembered and for which he will eternally be thanked by anglers everywhere.
